This week on the Brief we cover cyberattacks, gambling and mistaken identity: a standard week in the technology, innovation and media sector! We discuss Anthropic revealing that Claude hacked 3 companies without anyone noticing, New York is suing Kalshi for running an illegal gambling operation, and Amazon blocks AI scrapers so heavily that they’re blocking customers.
The vibe I’m feeling this week is one of shapeshifting and an identity crisis among many of top companies we covered this week. Kalshi claims to be one thing, but New York’s Attorney General is going to use the full extent of the law to prove they’re something else (an illegal gambling ring!). Amazon was the everything store, but has ballooned into… I’m honestly not sure anymore. A commerce-entertainment-healthcare-cloud-grocery-store-that-also-owns-Twitch mega company? One so busy blocking bots it forgot to let the humans in. And our lead story and culprit, Anthropic, wants to be a safety lab, a chatbot maker, the B2B efficiency Savior, and now, apparently, a proud participant in cybercrime.
W. Edwards Deming said, “If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing.” This week, three giant companies proved they can’t describe what they are, period. The lesson? We, the 8BN+ biological organisms walking the earth, know exactly who we are… we are humans! And we have no plans to pivot.
